Gumball 3000 is a 3000 mile internation road rally this year event is from Miami, FL to Ibiza, Spain. Charlotte became a day two checkpoint between Atlanta and New York, as Nascar Hall of Fame played host to a lunch and private tour for drivers.  This was reason enough for an extended lunch break from work and a chance to check out this year’s cars.

Strangely enough the oldest car in the field was the first car to arrive, as well as the first car to leave.  This year field was littered with super cars, as well as a tons of cars you might not expect.

After watching cars come in for a while, we decided we had a pretty good grip on the route and direction they where coming in. We ended up catching the cars coming in to the event and in the process gave several teams directions.

Sometime shortly after noon I made the mistake to decide I need to eat, in typical fashion this is when drivers felt the need to show up including Deadmau5 in the Purrari and Team Galag.

We where not allowed to get really close to the cars, with CMPD providing security and the area gated off.  When cars would come in, this would generally result in a mad rush to the streets and CMPD was great with managing the situation. This resulted in us getting a little bit more creative to shots without all of the crowd.

Overall Charlotte played a good host to the event, it could have been advertised and the venue was a bit small later in the day. Lots of locals shops and drivers turned out to check out the cars and we didn’t hear of any drivers running into trouble, other than getting a bit lost. Hopefully Charlotte will be a checkpoint again and we get to see some of these cars a second time.
